Distort Privacy Policy

Overview

Distort is a camera, LiDAR, depth, 3D, photo and video effects app for iPhone. Distort does not require an account. Your camera, LiDAR/depth, microphone, photo, video and tracking content is processed on your device rather than uploaded to a Distort server.

Camera, LiDAR, TrueDepth & Depth

Distort uses camera images and, on supported devices, LiDAR, TrueDepth and ARKit tracking information to render live visual effects and 3D scenes. Supported effects can estimate depth on-device when hardware depth is unavailable. Front-camera processing may use ARKit face tracking. This information is used for visual effects, not to identify you, and is not sent to external AI services.

3D Scans & Device Motion

3D features combine images, depth and motion tracking to create local point clouds and scene reconstructions. These may depict people, objects and surroundings you scan. Device motion helps orient 3D previews and recordings. You choose when to save or export your creations.

On-Device AI & Body Tracking

Distort uses bundled models including Depth Anything V2 Small and DETR, along with Apple Vision, to estimate depth, detect subjects and objects, analyze body and hand poses and color scenes. These features run on-device without sending frames to an external AI service. AI-generated results may be inaccurate and are intended for creative effects, not precise measurements or safety-critical uses.

Microphone

With your permission, Distort uses your microphone to include audio when you record video. Audio is processed on-device. If microphone permission is denied, supported video recording can continue without audio.

Imported Photos, Videos & Saving

Import Photo and Import Video use Apple's system picker to access only the media you select. Selected media and derived depth or subject masks are processed and temporarily cached on-device for editing; they are not uploaded. Distort requests add-only Photos permission to save creations and does not use that permission to browse your entire library.

If you choose to share an exported creation, the service you select through the iOS share sheet handles that copy under its own privacy practices. Media saved to Photos may sync through your Apple services according to your device settings.

Distort Pro Subscriptions

Distort Pro unlocks recording and saving in the LiDAR and Cube modes. Apple processes subscription payments, offer codes and cancellations. Distort uses Apple-verified purchase and entitlement status on-device to unlock these features. Distort does not receive your payment card information or send your purchase data to a Distort server. You can manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple Account settings.

Data Collection & Sharing

This version of Distort does not include advertising SDKs, third-party analytics SDKs, user accounts or cross-app tracking. Distort does not sell personal information or automatically send your camera, LiDAR/depth, microphone, imported media, scans or tracking content to third parties. Apple separately processes App Store transactions under Apple's privacy practices.

Retention & Deletion

Camera frames, analysis masks, pose/object results, scans and temporary recording files remain on-device as needed for the active effect or editing session. Imported-media copies and analysis caches are scheduled for deletion when replaced or when you leave editing. Temporary files from interrupted sessions may remain until cleaned up by the app or operating system. Creations you save remain in Photos, Files or your selected destination until you delete them there. Distort does not maintain a server-side user-content library.

Your Choices

You can manage Camera, Microphone, Photos and Motion permissions in iPhone Settings. Disabling permissions may prevent features that rely on them from working. You choose what to import, record, save and share.

Changes to This Policy

If Distort adds data practices or online services that change how your information is handled, we will update this policy.
